SAN FRANCISCO – February 12, 2013 – Tioga Energy®, a leading provider of renewable energy services to commercial, government and non-profit organizations, was recently recognized with two industry awards for its expertise in commercial-scale solar development and financing. Tioga’s solar energy project in Union County, NJ was selected as a Photovoltaic Project of Distinction at the PV America East conference and exhibition, organized by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA). Additionally, Tioga earned a silver medal from the Climate Change Business Journal as part of its 2012 Business Achievement Awards.

Comprising solar electric systems at 30 municipally owned facilities, the 3.34-MW Union County project is the result of a public-private partnership between Tioga Energy and the Union County Improvement Authority. Tioga Energy developed, financed and operates each system through a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA), and sells the electricity generated by the systems back to the county facilities at rates approximately 50 percent lower than those of the local utility.

The installations—which range in size from less than 10 kW to almost 500 kW—were constructed through a joint venture between Pro-Tech Energy Solutions and Huen Electric, Inc.

“This project was large and complex, and its success is the result of meaningful collaboration and hard work from numerous organizations,” said Paul Detering, CEO of Tioga Energy. “We are proud of our accomplishments and truly appreciate these recognitions from our peers.”

Officials from Kamehameha Schools, Tioga Energy and Hoku Solar today unveiled a new solar energy project for the Keauhou Shopping Center. Comprising solar electric systems installed on seven buildings in the shopping center, the 376-kW Keauhou Shopping Center PV Systems are one of the largest commercial solar electric projects on Hawai‘i island.

The Keauhou Shopping Center—owned by Kamehameha Schools—will now receive a significant portion of its electricity from on-site solar energy generation while reducing the facility’s environmental impact. Overall, the project will offset the production of approximately 455 tons of CO2 annually, which equates to some 989,000 vehicle miles not traveled or 52,000 gallons of gasoline conserved.

“Renewable energy is an investment for a brighter future. Solar projects like this installation at Keauhou Shopping Center move us closer to reducing Hawai‘i’s dependence on imported oil,” said Hawai‘i County Mayor Billy Kenoi. “Today, our island generates a significant percentage of its power from renewable energy; today, we move one step closer to a greener future.”

To implement the project, Kamehameha Schools utilized a SurePath Solar power purchase agreement (PPA) from Tioga Energy, enabling the organization to avoid the costs and complexities of system ownership. Tioga Energy developed, financed, owns, operates and maintains the systems and will sell the generated solar electricity to Kamehameha Schools.

“We see the need to decrease Hawai‘i’s dependence on imported fuel as an important goal for Kamehameha Schools as well as the state,” said Paul Quintiliani, director of commercial real estate for Kamehameha Schools. “With the assistance of Tioga Energy, we are able to incorporate solar power without the added responsibilities that come along with owning a system outright.”

“From a national perspective there is perhaps no better business case for solar than in Hawai‘i, where the cost of electricity is high, renewable resources are abundant and the government support is strong,” said Paul Detering, CEO of Tioga Energy. “As the state pushes toward 40 percent renewable energy by 2030, organizations like Kamehameha Schools are driving Hawai‘i toward a solar-powered future.”

The solar electric systems were built by Honolulu-based Hoku Solar, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hoku Corporation that delivers investment-grade solar energy facilities for commercial, institutional and utility clients.

“Hoku Solar is honored to partner with Tioga Energy and Kamehameha Schools on this renewable energy project; together with our subcontractors and vendors, we are proud to have had the opportunity to design, engineer and deliver solar PV systems that provide significant, positive and sustainable benefits for Hawai‘i,” said Jerrod Schreck, president of Hoku Solar.

According to Tioga Energy, the 390 kW project is expected to generate a lifetime electricity cost savings of nearly $500,000.

The Globe Courthouse now features a 205 kW solar electric system, designed to serve as a shade canopy for the facility’s parking lot. The courthouse will meet approximately 39 percent of its electricity needs with solar power, says Tioga.

Additionally, a 185 kW solar parking canopy is in place at the Central Heights Complex, home to Gila County operations including the Department of Elections and the Office of Emergency Management. That solar energy system is estimated to meet 84 percent of the facility’s electricity needs. Both systems were constructed by Phoenix-based Kitchell, says Tioga.

The solar system was made possible through Gila County’s 20-year SurePath Solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Tioga Energy. A PPA is a long-term agreement between Tioga Energy and a customer to provide solar electricity at guaranteed long-term rates. Tioga says it provides the design, financing, maintenance and support for all elements of the solar electricity system, including management of rebates and other government financial incentives.

Rather than putting 3.35 megawatts (MW) of solar all in one place, it’s distributed on the roofs of libraries, schools and community centers.
Installations range in size from less than 10 kilowatts to almost 500 kW.

“When site assessments revealed that many of our initial selections were not ideal targets for solar, our entire team of professionals stepped up to a major challenge and canvassed the area to secure new locations without compromising the scope of our renewable energy program,” says Charlotte DeFilippo, executive director of the Union County Improvement Authority. “By generating energy for our community from the sun, Tioga is helping us to realize long-term savings while helping the state of New Jersey retain its position as a renewable energy leader in the US.”

All the systems are financed through a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) between Tioga Energy and the Union County Improvement Authority. Tioga owns the systems, which are being paid for through a combination of solar renewable energy certificates (SRECs), low-interest municipal bonds and federal tax incentives.

Under the PPA, Union County will buy the solar electricity at 50% less than that offered by the local utility, saving money and providing a hedge against future pricing volatility.

This is Tioga’s third county-wide project in New Jersey. The company owns and operates more than 100 renewable energy systems across the U.S., they say

SurePath® Solar PPA yields long-term energy bill savings while reducing CO2 emissions

Globe, Ariz. – December 18, 2012 – Tioga Energy, a leading provider of renewable energy services to commercial, government and non-profit organizations, today announced the company completed two solar electric systems for municipally owned facilities in Gila County, Ariz. The 390-kW project is expected to generate a lifetime electricity cost savings of nearly $500,000.

The Globe Courthouse now features a 205-kW solar electric system, designed to serve as a shade canopy for the facility’s parking lot. The Courthouse will meet approximately 39 percent of its electricity needs with solar power.

Additionally, a 185-kW solar parking canopy is in place at the Central Heights Complex, home to Gila County operations including the Department of Elections and the Office of Emergency Management. That solar energy system is estimated to meet 84 percent of the facility’s electricity needs. Both systems were constructed by Phoenix-based Kitchell.

By executing a 20-year SurePath® Solar power purchase agreement (PPA) with Tioga Energy, the County avoided all the expenses associated with system ownership. Instead, Tioga developed, financed, owns, operates and maintains the systems; the County will simply purchase the generated solar electricity from Tioga at rates lower than those of the local utility.

“Tioga Energy helped us iron out the economics of going solar, enabling the County to benefit from federal and state-level incentives we couldn’t access on our own and implement our renewable energy program with no upfront costs,” said Steve Stratton, Director of the Public Works Department for Gila County. “These long-term savings free up resources we can redirect toward community enrichment endeavors, including facility upgrades and service improvements.”

In addition, Tioga provided the Globe Courthouse and the Central Heights Complex each with an educational kiosk that allows viewers to view real-time system production and weather data along with the corresponding environmental benefits of using solar energy.

The systems will offset the production of some 337 tons of CO2 each year, the equivalent of approximately 733,000 vehicle miles not travelled each year, or conserving 38,000 gallons of gasoline.

“Municipal leaders are increasingly investigating solar as a way to simultaneously reduce environmental impact and utility bills but often lack the means to bring their clean energy goals to life in a cost-effective manner,” said Paul Detering, CEO of Tioga Energy. “Our project with Gila County underscores Tioga’s ability to work alongside government organizations to develop long-term financial solutions that enhance the viability of renewable energy for municipalities across the country.”

Elizabeth, N.J. – December 11, 2012 – Tioga Energy®, a leading provider of renewable energy services to commercial, government and non-profit organizations, today announced the completion of 3.34 MW in solar electric systems for Union County, N.J. Incorporating installations at 30 separate sites across the county, the project represents the largest public-private partnership of its kind in the United States.

The primarily rooftop systems range in size from less than 10 kW to almost 500 kW and provide solar electricity to a variety of municipality-owned facilities including area schools, libraries and a community center for senior citizens. All systems were installed through a joint venture between Pro-Tech Energy Solutions and Huen Electric, Inc, with environmental and engineering management firm Whitman providing design services.

Each system was financed through a 15-year SurePath Solar power purchase agreement (PPA) from Tioga Energy, who also owns and will operate the systems. To optimize project economics, Tioga worked with the Union County Improvement Authority to combine low-interest municipal bonds with solar renewable energy certificate (SREC) sales and federal tax incentives. Tioga Energy will sell the electricity generated by the systems to the county at rates that are approximately 50 percent lower than those of the local utility, enabling significant savings and a hedge against electricity pricing volatility.

“When site assessments revealed that many of our initial selections were not ideal targets for solar, our entire team of professionals stepped up to a major challenge and canvassed the area to secure new locations without compromising the scope of our renewable energy program,” said Charlotte DeFilippo, Executive Director of the Union County Improvement Authority. “By generating energy for our community from the sun, Tioga is helping us to realize long-term savings while helping the State of New Jersey retain its position as a renewable energy leader in the U.S.”

“These solar installations are saving taxpayer money on energy costs, creating a renewable energy source, and reducing pollution,” said Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. “They are accomplishments all Union County residents can take pride in.”

“This project underscores the importance of collaboration to build and sustain solar energy markets across the country,” said Paul Detering, CEO of Tioga Energy. “Thanks to the combined efforts of the Union County Improvement Authority and a host of local agencies and facility managers, the county has achieved lasting benefits for its residents – and its budget.”

Washington Elementary School District goes solar with SurePath SSA

PHOENIX – November 27, 2012 – Tioga Energy, a leading provider of renewable energy services to commercial, government and non-profit organizations, today announced the completion of a 961 kW solar energy project for two sites in the Washington Elementary School District (WESD). This undertaking will save the WESD more than $1.5 million over the next 20 years, including over $28,000 in the first year of operation alone.

Solar electric systems are now in operation for WESD’s Mountain View and Sunnyslope Schools, meeting 61 and 82 percent of the schools’ electricity needs, respectively. Wilson Electric Services Corp. served as the engineering, procurement and construction partner for the project, installing more than 3,300 solar panels on rooftops and solar shade structures for school carports and playgrounds.

Through its 20-year SurePath solar services agreement (SSA) with WESD, Tioga Energy developed, financed and owns each system, also taking care of operation and maintenance. Tioga will sell the generated electricity to WESD at locked-in rates that are lower than those of the local utility, offering the district immediate energy savings as well as a hedge against future utility rate increases.

“Solar energy had been in our sights for quite some time, but the cost of purchasing systems outright was simply not in line with our budget. With Tioga Energy, we were able to achieve our energy saving and environmental goals without incurring any capital costs,” said Sue Pierce, Director of Facility Planning and Energy for the Washington Elementary School District. “As an added bonus, Tioga and Wilson Electric sponsored a National Energy Education Development program to teach our staff about the benefits of solar energy – lessons they can pass to our students. Overall, Tioga and Wilson Electric earned an A+ from our team.”

“As a prime location for solar energy, Arizona can easily shatter its goal of reaching 15 percent renewables by the year 2025 and become the nation’s solar powerhouse,” said Paul Detering, CEO of Tioga Energy. “Our work with WESD demonstrates that the cost of solar power is not an insurmountable barrier; with the support of a reliable service provider like Tioga, even the most budget-conscious organizations can achieve their sustainability objectives and realize major financial savings.”

About Washington Elementary School District
The Washington Elementary School District (WESD) is Arizona’s largest elementary district, serving more than 23,500 students in north Phoenix and east Glendale.

October 25, 2012

Locating PV panels on carports is becoming a key market segment to track across the US, and offers significant opportunities for module suppliers and systems integrators. However, a common view held by some PV carport developers is that every PV canopy can be classified as a ‘carport’.

Carports are used in a variety of ways and come in many shapes and sizes, but essentially fulfill the same basic function. Carports are ideally suited for PV deployment, providing (often) extensive flat areas with direct sunlight. PV carports can occupy areas already in use, thereby maximizing any existing space constraints.

Indeed, combining PV and carports offers various space-constrained advantages, and can be applied within a variety of applications including:

Parking lots: a parking lot is ideal for carports with PV. They allow full capacity operation of the PV modules while protecting cars from the elements.

Farms: farmers are also discovering that canopies with PV are ideal as tractor/plough-ports and as storage for hay-making equipment and produce.

Detention centers and schools: in the last few years, detention centers and schools have commissioned carports with PV as bus-ports. Solar canopies can also cover walkways, playgrounds and meeting areas.

Furthermore, applications are no longer limited to just small-scale PV deployment. For example, Rutgers University in New Jersey is planning a new carport covering 32 acres, with an output of 8MW. Indeed, this investment – at no cost to the University – is not the only attraction of this project. The carport also holds light fixtures and security cameras beneath the canopies to improve nighttime safety, as well as providing shelter from sun, rain and snow.

Another case involves the Hemet Unified School District in Riverside, California, which recently completed 17 systems of PV-based canopies at its elementary, middle and high schools. The projects – owned and operated by Tioga Energy – total 4.4MW and are projected to save the district approximately $300,000 annually in utility costs.

PV carports can also be utilized in space-constrained locations. Here, single or dual tracking systems can be employed successfully. For example, several companies are choosing this option in car dealerships across the US. The introduction of electric car charging stations is providing an excellent match with PV carports.

Therefore, carports are offering a wide range of solutions. They are not only aesthetically appealing but satisfy specific niches within the market. And, as such, this application type is now becoming a key segment for all PV suppliers to target across the US. The United States Deal Tracker currently lists over 450 projects, accounting for more than 500 MW, which involve carports or canopy installations.
